HOW CHRISTIANS SHOULD DEAL WITH SUFFERINGCentral Truth
Christians can stand firm and grow spiritually during trials.
James 1:1-8 (NIV) (1) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. (2) Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, (3) because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. (4) Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. (5) If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (6) But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (7) That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. (8) Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. “What are some ways people experience suffering?” Suffering is a fact of life, even for Christians. Whether it involves illness, finances, relationships, or personal safety, all believers will face hard times. But there’s hope during these struggles. God promises that we can endure as we look to Him during the most difficult seasons of life. LEARNING FROM TRIALS a. Trials Teach Perseverance James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him” (niv). b. “What are trials?” i. Trials are situations or circumstances that test our faith. Many times trials come from external sources, such as persecution for where we stand as Christians. ii. Trials also take the shape of internal, moral challenges, such as the temptation to sin by compromising godly standards. c. Many people say trials are corrections from God. i. They think trials must be punishment from God for wrongs they have done. Yet the Bible never teaches that trials must indicate God’s displeasure. d. “What does the Bible mean when it says that perseverance will, in the end, cause us to become ‘mature and complete’? (James 1:4 NIV).” i. Perseverance brings spiritual maturity and strength, much like physical striving results in strength and growth. THE WISDOM OFFERED BY GOD a. Spiritual growth does not result from our own effort and reasoning during those hard times. i. God reminds us that true wisdom comes only from Him (verse 5). ii. This truth prevents us from trusting our own understanding and ideas during trials. iii. We can get through any circumstance as we learn to lean fully on the Lord. b. “What is the true wisdom that God offers?” i. True wisdom means recognizing God’s will as the guide for our lives and decisions. ii. It involves seeking and receiving understanding from God to help us know how to respond when harsh trials come. iii. We risk falling into uncertainty when we rely on our own understanding in times of trial. c. It is dangerous to look for our own answers when tough times come. i. We will be tossed around by every circumstance. ii. Verse 6 describes a person who is torn between two contradictory ideas or desires. “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” iii.Y esterday’s perfect solution suddenly proves no good for today as we try to find an answer through our own wisdom. iv. The constant pressures of doubt and anxiety can make that individual unstable Verses 7-8 “That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” God gives us a better way to face our trials James 1:2 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” Does that mean we should be glad when we are going through trials and suffering? NO! It simply means while going through the trials and sufferings of life, we are to remain joyful because though trials are painful, they cannot take away your salvation, or the fact that God still loves you, or that God is still on your side. Remember: If God wants us to learn something, the quicker we learn the sooner we will be through the trial.
