JESUS HEALS AND GIVES LIFE

Central Truth: Jesus Christ is able to heal the mind, body, and soul.

Key Verse: Acts 10:38 “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him” (niv).

Introduction

The nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty” tragic ending: “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty has a great fall, all the king’s horses, and all the king’s men, couldn’t put Humpty together again.”

In the end, Humpty is broken and hopeless despite the best efforts by all the king’s men and horses.

Jesus is able to put broken people back together again, no matter how sick or sinful they are. Today’s study shows that Jesus has power over evil spirits, sicknesses, and death.

1. A DEMONIAC MADE WHOLE

a. Mark 5:1–10

b. Mark 5:3-5 “He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain. (4) He had often been restrained with shackles and chains but had snapped the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one could tame him. (5) Night and day he kept screaming among the tombs and on the mountainsides and kept cutting himself with stones.”

  • This describes the behaviour of a man who had a “demonic spirit” (verse 2).

  • c. Satan and his demons want to destroy people’s lives. They controlled this man so much that he was reduced to living like a wild animal. When Jesus recognized the man’s condition, He commanded the unclean spirit to come out of him (verse 8).

    d. The demons recognized Jesus’ power over them and submitted to Him.

    e. The demons asked to be sent into the pigs.

  • Even the pigs did not want the demons and rushed over the cliff and drowned in the sea.

  • f. When Jesus speaks demons obey.

  • Shouldn’t we, who are free be even more willing to obey?

  • 2. AN INCURABLE ILLNESS HEALED

    a. Mark 5:25-26 “Now there was a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years. (26) Although she had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all of her money, she had not been helped at all but rather grew worse.”

    b. As Jesus was making His way through a large crowd, a haemorrhaging woman was there, trying to get to Him (Mark 5:21,24,25).

  • Her constant bleeding over the past 12 years kept her perpetually unclean. According to the Law, anyone who touched her would also become unclean (see Leviticus 15:25–33).

  • Like the demoniac with an unclean spirit, she was an outcast because of her condition.

  • c. How do we know this woman had faith?

After hearing about Jesus, the woman believed that if she could just touch His clothes, she would be healed (verses 27, 28). She acted on this belief by pushing through the crowds to touch Him.

  • Jesus responded by saying to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague” (verse 34).

  • d. The word for “whole” (in some version “well”) is used of both spiritual and physical healing in the New Testament.

  • The rest of the verse suggests both are in view: “Go in peace” (with God because your sins are forgiven) and “be freed from your suffering”.

  • Conclusion

Jesus said (John 6:37) “Everyone whom my Father gives me will come to me. I will never turn away anyone who comes to me.”

We can trust the Lord to do all that is best for us.
